(16/06/08) 'Eyewatering' increases in the cost of petrol mean that council staff who drive their cars for work are now subsidising their employers. The impact on UNISON members is devastating, said the union's local government reps at their conference today, calling for immediate action to resolve what they termed a crisis. More from UNISON

Public Services Not Private Profit
www.publicnotprivate.org.uk

is a joint union campaign launched in March 2006 to defend public services against privatisation.

Billions of pounds of public funds are being wasted boosting the profits of private companies who are downgrading services and slashing conditions and jobs for public sector workers. This increased trend towards privatisation puts at risk the accountable and effective delivery of public services.

"Climate change is perhaps the gravest calamity our species has ever encountered. Its impact dwarfs that of any war, any plague, any famine we have confronted so far. It makes genocide and ethnic cleansing look like sideshows at the circus of human suffering."

"We need to put climate change right at the top of the political agenda — it is by far the biggest threat to humanity. We have to turn this into the primary political campaign. That means keeping on the streets, keeping up the demonstrations and putting an enormous amount of pressure on our politicians."

"It's not just ... that Bush has withdrawn from global agreements and global attempts to do something about this problem, he has actually quite deliberately gone about to try to destroy those attempts, and try to destroy any agreements to sort out climate change."

Honorary President George Monbiot
